The 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly comes at a decisive moment for humanity. The accelerating climate crisis, rapid urbanisation, and widening inequalities call for bold approaches that go beyond traditional State-led approaches and frameworks. Cities in the Global South are increasingly taking the lead in developing practical solutions, and Lagos stands out as a prime example.
Lagos, Nigeria’s economic powerhouse and Africa’s most vibrant metropolis, is home to more than 20 million people. It sits on the frontline of climate vulnerability, facing rising sea levels, recurrent flooding, and growing pressure on health and infrastructure systems. Yet, Lagos is not defined by risk alone. Its resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurial drive demonstrate that climate challenges can be turned into opportunities for inclusive and sustainable development.
